The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has officially received the final report from the special committee established to oversee the upgrading of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo, into a University of Agriculture and Technology. This milestone marks a significant step in the administration's long-term plan to restructure higher education in the state to meet contemporary demands. The Governor expressed his appreciation to the committee for their diligent work in assessing the institutional readiness and legal framework required for the transition.
During the presentation of the report, the Governor emphasized that the primary goal of the upgrade is to create more opportunities for students to pursue degree programs, particularly in specialized fields of technology and agriculture. This aligns with the state's vision to produce a workforce that is not only academically sound but also technically proficient in driving economic growth. The Governor also assured the staff and students of the institution that their interests would be protected throughout the transition process, emphasizing that the move is aimed at enhancing, not diminishing, the institution’s current strengths.
The committee’s report outlines the necessary infrastructural improvements, curriculum adjustments, and staff development programs needed to achieve university status. It also addresses the financial implications and the phased implementation plan for the coming years. With the report now in the hands of the executive council, the next phase will involve legislative approval and formal engagement with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to secure the required accreditation.
