The Defence Headquarters on Friday inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged mutiny and an attempt to overthrow the government.
The Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed this via a communiqué, noting that the inauguration held on April 24, 2026, followed an earlier announcement made on January 26, 2026.
He expressed the move underscores the Armed Forces’ commitment to discipline, accountability and the protection of constitutional authority.
“The Defence Headquarters has today 24 April 2026, inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged mutiny, aimed at overthrowing the government of the day. This is in furtherance of the DHQ’s statement issued on 26 January 2026 which dwelled on the subject.
“The inauguration marks a significant step in reinforcing discipline, accountability and the commitment of the Armed Forces to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority,” Uba affirmed.
He added that proceedings of the court would be conducted in line with due process.
“Proceedings of the court will be conducted with the highest standards of fairness, impartiality and strict adherence to due process, guaranteeing that justice will be served without fear or favour,” he pointed out.
Uba noted that all cases would be handled in accordance with existing military legal frameworks.
as confirmed by the military, investigations into the matter were concluded and findings submitted to appropriate authorities, with those indicted to face trial before a military judicial panel.
The military had also expressed that the investigation identified some personnel allegedly involved in plotting to overthrow the government, an act it described as inconsistent with the ethics and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
on the other hand, the FG had earlier arraigned six individuals, including two retired senior military officers, before a Federal High Court in Abuja over a related alleged coup plot.
The defendants include retired Major General Mohammed Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani, while a former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, was listed as being at large.
as pointed out by the charge marked FHC/ABJ/206/2026, the defendants are facing a 13-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy to overthrow the government.
Unlike the civil trial, proceedings of the military court martial are being held behind closed doors at the Scorpion Mess, with journalists barred from coverage.
