Appeal Court Fallout: Makinde, Bala Mohammed Split Over Wike Peace Deal
The leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened after reports of disagreements between Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed over how to handle reconciliation efforts with Nyesom Wike following the recent ruling of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria.

The appellate court had upheld an earlier judgment that invalidated the PDP national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, a convention backed by Makinde and other governors which produced the party’s National Working Committee.

The decision effectively strengthened the position of the rival faction aligned with Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and intensified the ongoing leadership struggle within Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Following the court’s verdict, efforts to reconcile both camps have reportedly triggered new divisions among PDP leaders. While some party figures, including Makinde, are said to be open to exploring a peace arrangement that could stabilise the party ahead of future elections, others within the camp led by Bala Mohammed are believed to be cautious about the terms of any deal involving Wike.

The dispute reflects deeper tensions over control of the party structure and the legitimacy of competing leadership claims within the PDP. Both factions have continued to seek recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while also pursuing legal battles over the convention and party leadership.

Earlier, the Court of Appeal advised the feuding factions to settle their differences internally in order to protect the stability and future of the party.

Political observers warn that the growing divisions could weaken the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections if party leaders fail to resolve the crisis quickly.
