The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has warned the Federal Government to immediately begin implementation of the newly approved salary structure for university lecturers or face possible industrial action that could disrupt activities in public universities nationwide.
The union issued a four-day ultimatum, with its President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, saying failure to act within the deadline would attract a strong response from the union. Piwuna gave the warning on Thursday while speaking at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, in Bauchi State.
He said the Federal Government must commence payment under the new salary arrangement without further delay, stressing that the ultimatum takes immediate effect.
The development comes after ASUU and the Federal Government concluded negotiations on a new agreement in December 2025, before it was formally signed and unveiled in January 2026 as part of efforts to resolve long-standing disputes in the university system and prevent recurring strikes. The agreement was expected to take effect from January 1, 2026.
