Bayelsa Mulls Higher Education Ministry
The Bayelsa State Government is considering the creation of a Ministry of Higher Education to streamline the management and development of tertiary institutions across the state. Governor Douye Diri hinted at this strategic move during a consultative meeting with heads of state-owned educational institutions and key stakeholders in Yenagoa on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

Currently, higher education matters are handled under the broader Ministry of Education. However, the Governor noted that the increasing number of state-owned institutions—including the Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), and various polytechnics—requires a more specialized administrative focus. The proposed ministry would be tasked with ensuring that these institutions meet global academic standards, securing consistent funding, and fostering research and innovation.

"Our goal is to decouple higher education from the primary and secondary education sectors to ensure that our universities and colleges receive the dedicated attention they deserve," the Governor stated. He emphasized that the new ministry would also act as a bridge between the state government, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and international educational partners to attract grants and exchange programs.

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the proposal, noting that a dedicated ministry would help address perennial issues such as accreditation hurdles and infrastructural deficits. If the plan is approved by the State House of Assembly, Bayelsa will join several other Nigerian states that have successfully implemented a two-tier ministry system to manage their expanding educational landscapes. The government is expected to send a formal bill to the legislature in the coming weeks to give the new ministry the necessary legal backing.
