Doctors Threaten Strike Over Assault On Colleague In Ogun
The Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the state government to provide adequate security in public hospitals or face a total strike action. This follows a recent incident at a state general hospital where a female medical doctor was reportedly assaulted by a disgruntled relative of a patient.

The association described the attack as "barbaric and uncalled for," noting that such incidents have become alarmingly frequent in public health facilities across the state. According to a statement released on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the association expressed dismay that healthcare workers, who are already stretched thin due to the massive brain drain in the sector, are now being subjected to physical violence while performing their life-saving duties.

The NAGGMDP Chairman in Ogun State stated that the proposed strike is not intended to punish the public but to ensure the safety of its members. The doctors are demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the assailant, as well as the deployment of armed security personnel to all high-risk medical centers. They warned that if their demands are not met by the expiration of the ultimatum, all government-owned general hospitals in the state will be shut down indefinitely. The state Ministry of Health has reportedly waded into the matter, calling for calm while promising to address the security lapses.
