Effurun killing: IGP Olatunji Disu orders dismissal, prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable in the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State. The decision at an emergency press conference in Abuja, following a review of the incident by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and other internal disciplinary procedures. The panel found that ASP Usman “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms,” and recommended his immediate dismissal alongside other officers implicated in the incident. “Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP indicated.

The IGP has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process. The extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by the ASP had sparked widespread outrage online.

Based on the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that Ogidi had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

Disu extended condolences to the family of the deceased and gave assurances that the case would be treated with the seriousness it deserved.

“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he showed.

The IGP reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that the institution is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability.

He called on members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and the protection of the rights and dignity of all citizens.
