Ekiti: Terrorism takes root in South-West
BANDITRY and terrorism have now taken root in the South-West, cancelling any notions of safe havens in Nigeria. This reality is underscored by the escalating attacks in Kwara, a border state, following the 2025 airstrikes in Sokoto. It marks a dangerous setback for a region once considered relatively insulated from extremist violence.

In one chilling incident, heavily-armed armed men invaded a church during an open-air crusade in Eda Oniyo, Ekiti State, on April 28, killing a pastor and abducting several worshippers. The Ekiti attack has reinforced growing fears that the terrorists are executing a wider agenda aimed at overrunning the South-West and, ultimately, the entire southern region. The trajectory of terrorism in Nigeria since 2009 lends weight to this concern.

Boko Haram’s insurgency began in Bauchi State in the North-East before spreading across the northern region. In the North-West, the violence mutated into banditry and. Especially Niger, Benue, Plateau and Kwara. Since.

Troops, the jihadists have dispersed southward, attacking churches and taking over communities. The Ekiti attack, therefore, should not be dismissed as an isolated incident or routine criminality. The reality is that terrorists are already embedded in Kwara.
