Former Minister of Sports Solomon Dalung has described the decision of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai, to surrender himself to security agencies as a monumental mistake. Dalung, known for his outspoken nature, suggested that the move might not yield the political or legal reprieve the former governor anticipates.
He argued that in the current Nigerian political climate, such gestures are often misinterpreted or weaponized by opponents.
The former minister noted that El Rufai has been a central figure in various national discourses and legal inquiries since leaving office. Dalung expressed concerns that by voluntarily stepping into the custody or interrogation rooms of state agencies, El Rufai has limited his own room for maneuver.
He claimed that the former governor should have remained more strategic in his approach to the allegations and probes trailing his administration.
Dalung further emphasized that the dynamics of loyalty in Nigerian politics are fragile. He suggested that El Rufais surrender might embolden those who seek to diminish his political influence ahead of future elections.
While the former governor has maintained that his actions are in the interest of transparency and the rule of law, Dalung insists that the timing and method of this surrender constitute a significant lapse in political judgment.
