The National Assembly has announced plans to reconvene an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, amid indications that lawmakers may review the date fixed for the 2027 presidential election.
A notice signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, directed senators and members of the House of Representatives to resume sitting at 11:00am, citing the need to take “very crucial decisions.”
Sources within the legislature disclosed that the extraordinary session is largely aimed at providing legislative backing for a possible adjustment of the presidential poll date from February 20 to February 13, 2027.
The move follows widespread concerns that the earlier date coincides with the Ramadan fasting period, which stakeholders argue could affect voter participation, especially among Muslim voters.
Lawmakers are expected to deliberate on amendments to the Electoral Act to accommodate the proposed shift, in line with requests earlier acknowledged by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
INEC had maintained that its 2027 election timetable was drawn in compliance with constitutional and legal provisions but assured Nigerians that it remains open to legislative intervention where necessary.
Political observers say the outcome of Tuesday’s plenary could significantly shape the credibility and inclusiveness of the 2027 general elections.
