EPL: Arokodare, three others face new wave of social media racism
Super Eagles forward and Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare has become the latest Premier League player to be subjected to racist abuse on social media, in what anti-discrimination campaigners have described as an “appalling weekend” for English football.

As reported by BBC on Monday, the Wolves forward received a series of racist messages following his side’s 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, a match in which he had a first-half penalty saved before a late winner settled the contest. Screenshots shared by both the player and the club showed a number of abusive messages sent from anonymous accounts.

“It’s still unbelievable to me that we’re playing in a time where people have so much freedom to communicate such racism without any consequences,”

“These individuals should have no place in our game and collectively we have to take action to punish everyone who taints the sport like this,”Arokodare wrote on Instagram.

Wolves said they were “disgusted” by the abuse from what they described as multiple perpetrators, condemning the “abhorrent and unlawful behaviour in the strongest possible terms.”

The club pledged its full support to the Nigeria international and confirmed it is working with the relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify those responsible.

Arokodare was not alone. Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle also received racist messages after his substitute appearance in a 3-1 home defeat by Fulham.

The club described the abuse as “vile” and “unacceptable,” stressing that those responsible “do not represent Sunderland AFC, our values, or our community.” Reports indicate the 22-year-old has since deleted his Instagram account.

The incidents followed similar abuse directed at Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri and Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana after their sides played out a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out said the latest cases underline a persistent problem in the game.

“This has been an appalling weekend after four players called out the racist abuse they’ve received on social media,” the group said. “But the sad fact is, we know it happens regularly. The message from them is loud and clear: action must follow.”

The Premier League also condemned the abuse and warned that serious consequences — including club bans and legal prosecution — could follow for anyone found guilty of discrimination.

Despite ongoing campaigns and partnerships with authorities and social media companies, racist abuse remains a recurring issue in English football, leaving players and clubs once again calling for stronger, more decisive action.
