Fans Sue FIFA Over Soaring 2026 World Cup Ticket Prices
A coalition of football supporters and consumer rights groups has taken legal action against FIFA over what they describe as excessively high ticket prices for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The complaint, filed with the European Commission, alleges that the football governing body is exploiting its dominant control over ticket sales to impose inflated prices and unfair purchasing conditions on fans.

Groups involved in the case argue that FIFA’s ticketing system lacks transparency and creates an uneven playing field for supporters. They claim that fans are being forced to accept restrictive terms due to the organization’s monopoly on ticket distribution.

One of the major concerns raised is the sharp increase in ticket costs compared to previous tournaments. Reports indicate that the cheapest tickets for the World Cup final are now priced above $4,000 significantly higher than prices seen during the 2022 edition.

In addition, some tickets listed on official resale platforms have reached extremely high figures, with certain seats being sold for tens of thousands of dollars, far exceeding their original value.

The groups also pointed out that earlier promises of affordable ticket options have not been fully realized. While lower-priced tickets were advertised, they appear to be limited in availability, making it difficult for many fans to access them.

FIFA, however, maintains that the pricing reflects strong global demand for the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The competition is expected to be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and over 100 matches.

The European Commission is expected to review the complaint under competition laws to determine whether FIFA’s ticketing practices violate consumer protection rules.
