FG Says Nigeria Needs $345m Yearly to Tackle Out-of-School Children Crisis
The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria will require an estimated $345 million annually to effectively address the growing number of out-of-school children across the country.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made this known during the inaugural Federal Ministry of Education Private Sector Breakfast Convening held in Lagos.

According to the minister, the funding requirement is based on current per capita spending needed to reintegrate and provide essential skills to the estimated 15 million children currently outside the formal education system.

He explained that addressing the crisis goes beyond enrolling children in schools, stressing the need for structured interventions that include skills acquisition, vocational training, and sustainable learning systems.

Alausa called on the private sector, development partners, and stakeholders to collaborate with the government in mobilising resources and implementing solutions to reduce the number of out-of-school children.

Education experts say Nigeria’s out-of-school population remains one of the highest globally, driven by factors such as poverty, insecurity, cultural barriers, and limited access to quality education.

The minister emphasized that sustained investment in education is critical to national development, warning that failure to address the crisis could have long-term implications for economic growth, security, and social stability.
