FIFA begins 100-day countdown to 2026 W’Cup, mum on Nigeria-DR Congo verdict
FIFA on Tuesday officially marked the final 100-day countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, celebrating the approaching tournament but offering no update on the pending disciplinary matter involving Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a message posted on its official X account, FIFA stated:

 “The biggest-ever @FIFAWorldCup is just 100 days away! 48 teams. 104 games. 11 June to 19 July.”
The governing body described June 11, 2026, as “the opening scene to the greatest show in the world,” referencing the tournament’s opening fixture between Mexico and South Africa.

However, despite the countdown celebrations, FIFA did not address the unresolved complaint filed by Nigeria against DR Congo over the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs.

The controversy stems from Nigeria’s loss to DR Congo in the African playoff final in November 2025. The Super Eagles were defeated on penalties, allowing DR Congo to advance to the intercontinental playoffs.

In December 2025, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) formally petitioned FIFA, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the qualifiers.

According to the NFF, former England youth internationals Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe represented DR Congo in violation of Congolese dual citizenship laws and FIFA eligibility regulations.

More than two months after the petition was submitted, FIFA has yet to announce a decision, although it previously confirmed the case was under review.

With DR Congo preparing for intercontinental playoff matches later this month, potentially against Jamaica or New Caledonia, the delay has generated concern among Nigerian football stakeholders and fans.

Should FIFA uphold Nigeria’s complaint, DR Congo could face disqualification, which may reopen Nigeria’s path in the qualification process.
