Former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party and defected to the African Democratic Congress.
Tambuwal, who currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the Senate, announced his decision after what he described as deep reflection and consultations with political associates and supporters.
In a statement confirming his exit from the PDP, the former governor said he had already communicated his resignation to his ward chairman in writing.
Tambuwal explained that the decision was largely influenced by the persistent internal crisis, leadership disputes, and widening divisions that have continued to weaken the opposition party.
According to him, the situation within the PDP has made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party, noting that the disagreements have eroded the unity and direction that once defined the political platform.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed appreciation to the PDP for the role it played in his political journey, which includes his election as Speaker and his two-term tenure as governor of Sokoto State.
He said his move to the ADC was guided by his belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability and inclusiveness.
Political observers say the defection could further reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the ADC continues to attract prominent politicians seeking an alternative political platform.
Tambuwal’s move also comes amid ongoing tensions and leadership struggles within the PDP, which analysts say have contributed to several defections and internal divisions across the party in recent months.
