Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a well-known Islamic scholar and security commentator, stated in a recent interview that the Nigerian government possesses detailed intelligence on terrorist networks within the country. According to Gumi, this includes specific information about who the terrorists are and where they are operating, yet coordinated action appears limited.
The cleric’s remarks come amid heightened concerns about terrorism in Nigeria, particularly in regions affected by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and banditry. Gumi emphasized that while the information exists at government level, effective use of it to prevent attacks has been inconsistent.
Gumi called for urgent, transparent strategies to tackle insurgency and banditry, urging security agencies to act decisively on intelligence. He also highlighted the importance of community engagement and collaboration with traditional leaders in addressing root causes of terrorism.
Security experts note that if Gumi’s claims are accurate, delays in operational responses could exacerbate public distrust and insecurity in already volatile regions.
