Armed gunmen have abducted several residents in Sokoto State following a late-night raid on a rural community, triggering an intensified rescue operation by security forces.
The attack took place in Chacho village, located in Wurno Local Government Area, where the assailants stormed the area around 11 p.m., firing gunshots and causing widespread panic among residents. Many villagers fled for safety as the attackers carried out the operation.
Authorities confirmed that the gunmen reportedly gained entry into the community through a route linked to a nearby forest known for criminal hideouts in the region.
The Sokoto State Police Command has since deployed tactical teams to the area to track down the perpetrators and rescue those abducted. According to officials, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact number of victims and the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the attack occurred while most residents were asleep, worsening the level of confusion and making it easier for the gunmen to operate undetected.
Security agencies have reassured the public that efforts are being intensified to restore calm in the affected community and prevent further attacks. Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and provide useful information that could assist in the rescue efforts.
The incident adds to ongoing security concerns in parts of northern Nigeria, where communities continue to experience repeated cases of banditry and abductions.
