Iran has claimed responsibility for a missile strike on a U.S.-linked oil tanker in the northern part of the Persian Gulf, in what appears to be a fresh escalation in the ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington.
According to Iranian state media, the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its naval forces targeted the tanker with missiles, leaving the vessel on fire. The Guards also warned that maritime passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz would remain under Iran’s control during the conflict.
Reports indicated that the incident occurred amid a widening military confrontation involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which has already led to several attacks on energy infrastructure and commercial vessels in the Gulf region.
Shipping activities around the Strait of Hormuz — a vital route for global oil supplies — have been severely disrupted as a result of the escalating hostilities, with many vessels suspending movement due to security risks.
While Iran claims the tanker strike was part of its military operations in the Gulf, the United States has not immediately confirmed the attack or provided details on the extent of damage or possible casualties.
Security analysts warn that further attacks on oil tankers and energy facilities in the region could have significant implications for global energy markets and maritime security.
