The Lagos State Commissioner of Police has officially directed the withdrawal of all personnel attached to the State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Task Force, from traffic management operations across the metropolis. This directive, which takes immediate effect, was issued following a series of complaints regarding the unit's involvement in traffic-related disputes and the need for a more streamlined approach to road safety in the state.
According to the Commissioner, the Task Force was primarily established to enforce the state's environmental laws and to provide support in the fight against organized crime and social disturbances. The decision to remove them from traffic duties is intended to allow the unit to focus more effectively on its original mandate while leaving traffic management to specialized agencies like the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Police Traffic Division.
The police command emphasized that this move should not be misinterpreted as a reduction in security presence on Lagos roads. Instead, it is a strategic realignment of duties to ensure that each agency operates within its professional scope. The Commissioner also warned that any Task Force officer found engaging in unauthorized traffic enforcement would face disciplinary action. Residents have been encouraged to cooperate with the designated traffic authorities and to report any unprofessional conduct by law enforcement officers through the provided channels.
