Morocco has defended the decision of the Confederation of African Football to award it the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title following a controversial ruling that stripped Senegal of the trophy.
The Moroccan football authorities maintained that their appeal was not about disputing the on-field outcome but about upholding the rules governing the competition, particularly regarding match abandonment and disciplinary conduct.
According to reports, CAF’s Appeal Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the final after their players walked off the pitch in protest over a late penalty decision. The match was subsequently recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of Morocco.
Morocco emphasized that any team leaving the field without proper authorization violates tournament regulations, and that enforcing such rules is essential to maintaining fairness and discipline in African football.
However, the decision has sparked intense backlash. Senegal’s football federation has described the ruling as “unfair and unprecedented,” arguing that the match was completed and should not have been overturned.
The controversy stems from dramatic events during the final, where Senegal players temporarily walked off the pitch following a disputed penalty call before later returning to continue the game.
Despite completing the match and initially winning 1–0 after extra time, CAF later ruled that the walkout constituted a breach of its regulations, justifying the forfeiture.
Senegal has since indicated plans to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, setting the stage for a prolonged legal and administrative battle.
The situation has triggered widespread debate across the football world, raising questions about sportsmanship, officiating, and the balance between rules and on-field outcomes.
