The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo State Command, has announced the seizure of illicit drugs with an estimated street value of ₦1.8 billion between January and March 2026. This significant achievement was disclosed by the State Commander during a press briefing in Benin City on Tuesday. The operations, which spanned several local government areas, were part of the agency's intensified efforts to curb the distribution and consumption of hard drugs in the state.
According to the NDLEA, the seized substances include large quantities of cannabis sativa, tramadol, and other synthetic drugs. In addition to the seizures, the command successfully arrested over 50 suspects linked to various drug trafficking networks. The Commander also highlighted the discovery and destruction of several hectares of cannabis farms, particularly in the forested areas of the state, which serve as primary cultivation hubs for local and regional supply.
The agency attributed the success of these operations to enhanced intelligence gathering and the support of local communities. The NDLEA also emphasized its commitment to the "War Against Drug Abuse" (WADA) campaign, which focuses on both enforcement and public enlightenment. The State Command urged residents to continue providing useful information that could lead to the arrest of drug kingpins, noting that the fight against drug abuse is essential for reducing crime and improving public health in Edo State.
