The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have announced a renewed commitment to deepen their collaboration in tackling the activities of international drug cartels and their growing links to terrorism. This was disclosed during a high-level meeting in Abuja between the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), and a delegation from the US DEA. The meeting focused on enhancing intelligence sharing, joint operations, and capacity building for NDLEA officers.
Marwa highlighted that the nexus between drug trafficking and the funding of terrorist organizations has become a major global security concern that requires a more robust and coordinated response. He expressed appreciation for the continued support from the US government, particularly in the areas of training and the provision of advanced surveillance equipment. According to Marwa, the collaboration has already yielded significant results, including the interception of several high-profile drug consignments and the arrest of key kingpins involved in cross-border trafficking.
On their part, the US DEA representatives reiterated their commitment to supporting Nigeria's efforts in dismantling the networks of organized crime. They noted that Nigeria remains a critical partner in the global drug war and emphasized the importance of a unified front to address the evolving tactics used by cartels. The partnership is expected to involve more frequent joint tactical exercises and the expansion of the "vetted units" within the NDLEA to further institutionalize the high standards of integrity and efficiency required for successful counter-narcotics operations.
