The Federal Government has confirmed that Nigeria has received supplies of Lenacapavir, an innovative HIV prevention treatment designed to strengthen the country’s response to the virus.
The National Coordinator of the National HIV, Viral Hepatitis and STDs Control Programme at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Adebobola Bashorun, disclosed this in a statement.
According to Bashorun, the arrival of the vaccine reflects Nigeria’s continued commitment to adopting innovative and evidence-based interventions aimed at accelerating progress toward controlling the HIV epidemic in the country.
Health authorities explained that Lenacapavir is an injectable treatment administered twice a year, offering a more convenient option compared with the traditional daily oral preventive medications used by people at risk of contracting HIV.
Experts say the treatment could significantly improve adherence to HIV prevention therapy, as patients would no longer need to take daily pills, which often pose challenges for consistent use.
The Federal Government noted that the introduction of the new preventive treatment forms part of broader strategies aimed at reducing new HIV infections, improving access to healthcare services, and strengthening Nigeria’s public health system.
Public health specialists believe that the deployment of Lenacapavir could play a critical role in helping Nigeria move closer to achieving global targets for ending the HIV epidemic, particularly among high-risk populations.
