Indian security agencies have confirmed the arrest of a Nigerian national in connection with the smuggling of illicit drugs worth an estimated ₦140 million ($100,000). The suspect, identified as Chukwuma Onyekachi, was intercepted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) during a targeted raid on a residential apartment in the Dwarka area of New Delhi on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
According to a spokesperson for the NCB, the operation was the result of weeks of surveillance on a suspected drug distribution ring operating across major Indian cities. During the search, officers recovered significant quantities of cocaine and high-purity methamphetamine concealed within household items. Preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs were intended for distribution among high-end clientele in the capital and surrounding regions.
The suspect, who reportedly entered India on a business visa that had since expired, is currently being held in custody as part of a broader investigation into his local and international links. Indian authorities have stated that they are working with the Nigerian High Commission in Delhi to verify his credentials and background. This latest arrest underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in both nations as they combat the persistent activities of cross-border drug cartels. The suspect faces stiff penalties under India's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act if found guilty.
