The Edo State Government has intervened in the brewing leadership crisis surrounding the traditional stool of Okpella in Etsako East Local Government Area. In a statement released on Thursday, April 2, 2026, the government expressed deep concern over reports of planned forceful takeovers and unauthorized installations, which threaten the peace and security of the locality.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs emphasized that the process of filling traditional stools is strictly governed by the state's Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law. The government warned that any individual who proclaims themselves a traditional ruler or attempts to seize the palace without following the official gazetted process would face the full weight of the law. Security agencies have been placed on high alert to prevent any breakdown of law and order in Okpella and its environs.
According to the government, the dispute is currently receiving administrative attention, and all parties involved are urged to maintain the status quo and exercise restraint. The state authorities reminded stakeholders that the sanctity of traditional institutions must be preserved through adherence to established customs and legal frameworks. "No person or group will be allowed to bypass the law to satisfy personal or sectional ambitions at the expense of public safety," the statement concluded. Community leaders and youth groups have also been advised to avoid being used as instruments of destabilization while the government works toward a peaceful resolution of the kingship tussle.
