An All Progressives Congress (APC) Ondo Central senatorial aspirant, Mr. Muyiwa Adu, has urged the party to adopt the direct primary system for selecting candidates ahead of upcoming elections, saying it gives all members a fair voice and discourages imposition by party leaders.
Adu, a legal practitioner and party chieftain, spoke in Akure on Sunday, praising the conduct of the party’s recent local government congresses and arguing that direct primaries remain the most democratic method for choosing candidates. He said the practice of imposing aspirants on members “is very wrong” and undermines the will of ordinary party supporters.
He emphasised that every registered APC member should be allowed to participate in the candidate selection process, rather than limiting the decision to a handful of delegates chosen by a few leaders.
Adu said, “If you are a member of a political party and you carry a card identifying you as such, you can come out and join others to choose who should be your candidate in an election. That is perfectly in order.”
The aspirant warned that imposing candidates through elite decisions has historically caused internal divisions. He urged the party to embrace broader participation and avoid actions that could create disaffection among members.
The call comes as APC prepares for state congresses and primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, with party stakeholders debating the best method to adopt in order to ensure unity and competitive contests.
