Concerns over insecurity in the South-West have intensified following the reported attack on three schools in Yawota and Esiele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The attack, reportedly carried out by armed men on Friday, allegedly left two persons dead while pupils and teachers were abducted.
An editorial reacting to the development described the incident as evidence that the school-abduction crisis previously associated with other parts of the country may now be spreading into the South-West. It warned that the region could become increasingly exposed if urgent and coordinated security measures are not implemented.
The piece called on the governors of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states to move beyond public statements and adopt clear operational strategies to strengthen security across the region. It urged the governors to convene an emergency regional security meeting and consider the establishment of a regional security office with a dedicated coordinator to work with federal security agencies and local structures, including the Oodua People’s Congress and Amotekun Corps.
According to the editorial, the attack reportedly occurred shortly after morning assembly at Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and another nearby school, with the attackers operating in broad daylight.
The development has renewed calls for stronger intelligence gathering, coordinated regional policing efforts and improved protection for schools, especially in vulnerable rural communities. Security experts have repeatedly warned that isolated state responses may not be sufficient to confront increasingly mobile criminal networks operating across state boundaries.
The incident has also intensified debate over regional security collaboration in the South-West, as stakeholders continue to demand more proactive measures to prevent further attacks on schools and communities.
