Political parties in Nigeria have raised fresh concerns over the 2026 draft regulations introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, warning that some provisions could negatively impact the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
The concerns were expressed during a consultative meeting held in Abuja, where party leaders, under the Inter-Party Advisory Council, reviewed the proposed guidelines.
Among the key issues raised was the requirement for mandatory direct primaries, which party representatives described as impractical given the logistical and financial challenges involved in conducting such exercises nationwide.
They also criticised the directive on the strict submission of party membership registers, arguing that it could be exclusionary and difficult to implement, especially for parties with large and diverse memberships.
Party leaders warned that enforcing such provisions without adequate flexibility could create barriers for participation and weaken the democratic process.
They further noted that the credibility of the 2027 elections would depend largely on the fairness, inclusiveness, and practicality of the electoral framework guiding political activities.
However, some analysts believe the proposed regulations are part of efforts by INEC to improve transparency, internal party democracy, and accountability within political parties.
The discussions are expected to continue as stakeholders engage with the electoral body to refine the draft and ensure it aligns with democratic best practices.
