PCRC Key To Intelligence Gathering, Grassroots Security — IG

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has reiterated that the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) remains the backbone of intelligence gathering and grassroots security in Nigeria. Speaking at a national stakeholders' forum on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the IGP stated that the partnership between the police and the public is essential for identifying and neutralizing criminal threats before they escalate.

The IGP noted that the modern challenges of internal security—ranging from kidnapping to communal clashes—cannot be solved by tactical operations alone. Instead, he argued that "community ownership of security" is the most effective deterrent. By working closely with the PCRC, the police gain access to timely, localized information that often bypasses traditional surveillance methods.

"The PCRC is not just an auxiliary body; it is a strategic partner in our quest for a safer Nigeria," the IGP remarked. "Members of the committee are our eyes and ears in every neighborhood. Their contribution to intelligence-led policing has led to the successful prevention of numerous crimes over the past year."

During the event, the IGP also called for the further decentralization of PCRC activities to the ward levels and encouraged the inclusion of more youth and professionals in the committee. He assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to acting on the information provided by these community leaders while ensuring the protection of informants. The session concluded with a pledge from PCRC leadership to deepen their collaboration with the police to ensure a more secure environment for all citizens.
