Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the reported arrest of a cleric who hosted him during a recent visit to Kaduna State.
Obi disclosed that the cleric was taken into custody shortly after his visit, describing the development as troubling and raising questions about civil liberties and freedom of association.
According to him, the cleric had simply offered hospitality during his stay in the state, and there was no indication of any wrongdoing prior to the arrest. He expressed worry that such actions could create fear among citizens and discourage individuals from freely interacting with political figures.
The former presidential candidate emphasized the need for authorities to uphold the rule of law and ensure that individuals are not unjustly targeted. He warned that incidents like this could undermine democratic values and public trust in institutions.
Obi called on relevant authorities to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest and to ensure that justice is served in a transparent and lawful manner.
The situation has sparked reactions from observers, with many expressing concern about the implications for political freedom and civic engagement in the country.
