The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation following a viral video showing alleged sexual assault of women during a community festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, reportedly captured groups of young men attacking women in public, forcibly tearing their clothes and subjecting them to various forms of molestation.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, during an annual festival in the community, where it is allegedly customary for women to remain indoors.
It was further claimed that any woman found outside during the event becomes a target for harassment by participants.
Some accounts suggested that beyond molestation, certain victims may have been raped, although these claims have not yet been officially confirmed.
Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, described the development as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing.”
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, has ordered a full investigation into the matter.
The police condemned the act, stressing that no custom or tradition is superior to the rights and dignity of citizens.
The command assured the public that those responsible for the acts would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
Residents and witnesses with useful information have been urged to come forward to assist ongoing investigations.
