The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially revised the timetable for the 2027 general elections, moving major poll dates earlier following changes in Nigeria’s election law.
Under the updated schedule, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are set for Saturday, February 6, 2027.
The shift comes after the Electoral Act 2026 replaced the earlier 2022 law, prompting a review of statutory pre-election timelines and the realignment of electoral activities to ensure compliance with the new legal framework.
Key dates and activities under the revised timetable include:
- Notice of election: February 13, 2026
- Submission of political parties’ membership registers: April 1–21, 2026
- Party primaries & dispute resolution: April 23–May 30, 2026
- Campaign start for Presidential & National Assembly polls: August 19, 2026
- Campaign start for Governorship & State Assembly polls: September 9, 2026
- Campaigns end: 24 hours before each election, as mandated by law.
In addition, INEC has rescheduled the Osun State Governorship Election from August 8 to August 15, 2026, while activities for the Ekiti election will proceed under the new timetable.
INEC emphasised that all stakeholders — political parties, civil society, and voters — must adhere strictly to the revised timetable to ensure credible and inclusive elections that reflect the sovereign will of Nigerians.
