Tragedy struck in Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, as a fatal motor accident claimed the lives of three people along the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road.
According to eyewitness accounts, the collision involved a fully loaded commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a private Lexus SUV. The impact of the crash was so severe that both vehicles veered off the road into a nearby ditch, causing immediate fatalities.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwa Ibom Command, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to coordinate rescue operations.
The Sector Commander confirmed that three adult males died on the spot, while five other passengers were rescued with critical injuries and rushed to a nearby tertiary health facility for emergency treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by a combination of overspeeding and a burst tire from one of the vehicles involved.
The FRSC has once again appealed to motorists to observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on trips, especially during the festive Easter period.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at a local mortuary pending identification by their families. Traffic on the affected route was disrupted for several hours as emergency responders worked to clear the wreckage and restore the flow of vehicles.
