President Bola Tinubu has formally written to the Senate seeking the screening and confirmation of Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance. The request was contained in a letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Oyedele, an economist and public policy expert, is expected to replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State.
Before his nomination, Oyedele served as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system and improve government revenue generation.
The 50-year-old policy expert spent more than two decades at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), rising to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. He holds a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology and a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, alongside executive training from institutions such as the London School of Economics and Harvard Kennedy School.
In a separate request, President Tinubu also asked the Senate to confirm former Rivers South-East senator, Magnus Abe, as Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), following the resignation of Gbenga Komolafe.
The President further nominated Engineer Paul Yaro Jezhi and Mr Sunday Adebayo Babalola as non-executive commissioners of the commission.
All the nominations have been referred to the relevant Senate committees for screening and further legislative consideration.
The appointments are seen as part of the federal government’s effort to strengthen leadership in key economic and regulatory institutions, particularly in Nigeria’s finance and petroleum sectors.
