Two ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet have resigned to contest elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections. The development follows the Federal Government’s directive that political appointees seeking elective office must resign on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
The affected officials are the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu. Reports say Tuggar resigned to pursue the Bauchi State governorship, while Sununu stepped down to contest the Kebbi senatorial seat.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Tuggar’s resignation, while his media team said he is interested in the Bauchi governorship race. Sununu’s resignation was also reported on Monday as part of compliance with the presidential directive.
The directive was issued pursuant to Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires political appointees to resign before participating in party primaries or seeking nomination for any elective office. The order applies to ministers, special advisers, assistants, heads of agencies and chief executives of government institutions.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has scheduled party primaries for April 23 to May 30, 2026, with submission deadlines for candidates fixed for July 11 for presidential and National Assembly elections, and August 8 for governorship and state assembly elections.
