Aina, who spoke to his club’s media team at Nottingham Forest, explained that his roots ultimately guided his choice.
Born in Southwark, London, to Nigerian parents, Aina was eligible to play for both countries and initially progressed through England’s youth system, featuring from Under-16 to Under-20 level. He was also called up to the Under-21 squad in 2015, a move that suggested a possible future with the senior team.
on the other hand, that path never fully materialised, and the defender began to reconsider his options. A breakthrough later came in March 2017 when he accepted an invitation to train with Nigeria’s senior team, the Super Eagles, in London.
“Born and raised in London, I decided to play for Nigeria. It was just a decision that I made when I was about 20. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my origin.“The opportunity came for me and I thought it was the right one at that time, so I took it with both hands, and I’m here today,” he noted.
Because he had already represented England at youth level, Aina required approval from FIFA to switch allegiance. The clearance came in time for him to make his debut for Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier against Zambia in October 2017.
Reflecting on his journey, Aina mentioned the decision has been rewarding both professionally and personally, especially for his family.
“My family is very proud of me, especially when I wear the Super Eagles shirt. They love it more than me. Even for me, it’s a privilege; it’s an honour. It’s amazing to actually play for them,” he expressed.
Since making the switch, Aina has experienced mixed fortunes with the national team. He was left out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2018 World Cup, while the Super Eagles also failed to qualify for the 2022 and 2026 editions.
In spite of that, he has enjoyed success at the Africa Cup of Nations, winning bronze in 2019 and silver in 2023, where he was also named in the Team of the Tournament.
At club level, the former Chelsea player is currently part of the squad that will take on Aston Villa in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League. The team is fighting relegation and currently sits 16th on the table.
