A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike has announced a new set of state executives in Ondo State, further highlighting the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.
The faction conducted its state congress in Akure, where party members selected new officials to lead its structure in the state. Emerging from the exercise, Olaniyi Ogungbuji was named chairman, while Yagba Timilehin took up the position of state secretary.
The congress was reportedly observed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies, indicating an organized effort to formalize the faction’s leadership structure.
Speaking at the event, organisers emphasized the need for unity and reconciliation within the party, stating that efforts were ongoing at both state and national levels to resolve internal disputes. They urged members to set aside personal interests and work collectively to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman pledged to reposition the party in Ondo State and mobilize support ahead of the 2027 general elections. He stressed that unity among members would be critical to achieving electoral success.
Other members of the executive committee were also elected during the congress to fill various party positions.
However, the existing state leadership under another faction rejected the exercise, dismissing it as illegitimate and lacking proper procedural backing. The opposing group argued that the congress did not follow established party guidelines and therefore holds no validity.
The development reflects the deepening divisions within the PDP, as rival factions continue to assert control over party structures in different states.
