Analyst, Callers Fault Fresh Petrol Import Approvals
Public affairs analyst Adebisi Aduloju says reports of fresh petrol import approvals for marketers may not stabilise fuel supply in the country. Speaking on Glow FM’s current affairs programme, Issues in the Dailies, Aduloju described the development as a step in the wrong direction, warning that it could create room for the circulation of low-quality petrol and possible damage to vehicles and other property.

Callers who featured on the programme also spoke against the importation of petrol by marketers, expressing concern over the likely effect on fuel quality, local refining efforts and long-term market stability.

The reactions follow fresh reports that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, approved a new round of petrol import licences for six marketers to bring in about 180,000 metric tonnes of petrol, following supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East. However, the issue has drawn debate because the regulator had earlier said domestic production was sufficient and that import licences had been paused.

In a separate reaction, the Energy Transparency and Market Justice Initiative, ETMJI, condemned the move, describing it as a policy reversal that could weaken recent gains in local supply and reopen the market to lower-quality petroleum products. The group warned that renewed importation could undermine domestic refining and create fresh uncertainty for investors in the sector.
