The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria has provided training and support to around 200 households in Ekiti State as part of efforts to reduce poverty and encourage self-reliance.
The initiative, implemented through Caritas Nigeria, focused on equipping beneficiaries with practical skills and tools to help them build sustainable sources of income. Participants were trained in various agricultural and processing activities, including rice, cassava, tomato, pepper, and fish production.
Following the training, the beneficiaries received starter kits to help them begin small-scale production and improve their earning capacity. The programme covered communities in Ekiti West and Irepodun/Ifelodun local government areas.
Church leaders involved in the project noted that the initiative is designed not only to support individuals but also to stimulate local economies. By enabling participants to process farm produce and create value-added products, the programme is expected to generate employment opportunities and benefit wider communities.
They encouraged participants to make effective use of the resources provided, stressing that the goal is to help families achieve long-term financial stability and become contributors to economic growth.
Officials from Caritas also emphasized the importance of commitment and consistency, urging beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity to improve their livelihoods and potentially employ others in the future.
The empowerment programme reflects ongoing efforts by faith-based organisations in Nigeria to address poverty through skills development, entrepreneurship, and community based support systems.
