Fresh concerns have emerged over preparations for the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State following the redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The election date has already been fixed by INEC as political activities continue to build up in the state.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Adewunmi Adesina, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights said the transfer could affect public confidence in the electoral process if not properly managed. The group acknowledged that staff postings fall within the powers of INEC, but maintained that the timing of the redeployment had generated anxiety among stakeholders.
The rights organisation said the development had raised fresh concerns about neutrality and transparency ahead of the poll, warning that early signs of tension should not be ignored. It added that the credibility of the election would depend not only on assurances by INEC, but also on how the commission handles sensitive decisions in the build-up to the exercise.
INEC, however, has dismissed the concerns, describing the redeployment of Agboke as a routine administrative procedure. The commission said the transfer should not be interpreted as interference in the forthcoming governorship election.
The development comes amid heightened political interest in the Osun governorship race, with stakeholders closely watching every step in the electoral process as the state moves toward the August 15, 2026 poll.
