The Kebbi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has successfully auctioned a total of 66,500 litres of seized Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol. The products were intercepted at various points along the border while being smuggled out of the country. According to the Customs Area Controller, the decision to auction the fuel immediately was in line with current directives to ensure that seized perishable and inflammable items are disposed of transparently to benefit the public.
The auction took place at the command headquarters in Birnin Kebbi, drawing a significant number of residents and licensed petty traders. Officials noted that the fuel was sold at a subsidized rate to help alleviate the current energy pressures on the local population. This move is part of a broader strategy by the Federal Government to ensure that products meant for the Nigerian market are not illegally exported to neighboring countries for higher profits.
During the exercise, the Command reiterated its commitment to making Kebbi State a difficult terrain for economic saboteurs. The Area Controller warned that the service has deployed more intelligence-driven operations to track down those involved in the illicit trade of petroleum. The proceeds from the auction have been remitted into the federation account, as the Nigeria Customs Service continues to balance its enforcement roles with public service.
