The appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police is expected to trigger the retirement of several senior officers within the Nigeria Police Force.
Traditionally, when a junior officer is elevated to the position of IGP, officers who are senior in rank are required to step down in line with established police hierarchy and command structure.
Following Disu’s emergence, the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police likely to retire include:
- Frank Mba – Senior DIG and former National Police Force spokesman.
Mohammed Gumel – DIG in charge of the Force Intelligence Department.
Adebola Hamzat – DIG overseeing Logistics and Supply.
Yahaya Abubakar – DIG heading Finance and Administration.
Basil Idegwu – DIG responsible for Research and Planning.
Bzigu Kwazhi – DIG in charge of Operations.
Idris Abubakar – DIG with extensive leadership experience.
Adebowale Williams – DIG heading Information and Communication Technology.
The development marks a significant reshuffling within the top echelon of the police force as the new acting IGP prepares to take charge.
Observers say the anticipated retirements are in line with standard police practice aimed at preserving order, discipline, and administrative coherence within the force.
