The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a sweeping increase in peculiar allowances and other welfare benefits for civil servants, in a move aimed at improving take-home pay and boosting morale across the public service. The announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a press briefing in Abuja, where she outlined key reforms recently approved by the government.
Walson-Jack said the revised peculiar allowances have been structured to reflect across all grade levels, resulting in a meaningful increase in earnings for both junior and senior officers. She explained that the review affects workers under both CONPSS and CONRAISS, giving the policy a broad reach across the federal civil service.
She also disclosed that several other official entitlements have been reviewed upward, including Duty Tour Allowance, estacode, and book allowance. A major highlight of the reform, according to her, is the approval of 100 per cent Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending approved training programmes, even where travel is not involved.
Beyond the allowance review, the Federal Government also introduced additional welfare measures, including a new exit benefit scheme for retiring civil servants under the contributory pension scheme. The Office of the Head of the Civil Service had earlier described the gratuity approval as a landmark step toward improving the welfare and retirement security of federal workers.
The government’s welfare package also includes the operationalisation of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme for work-related injury, disease, disability or death, as well as a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme for civil servants, according to reports from the same briefing.
Walson-Jack said the measures are part of ongoing efforts to reposition the Federal Civil Service, improve worker welfare, and strengthen productivity across government institutions.
