The Federal Government has announced a six-year ban on the establishment of new universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
The decision, according to authorities, is aimed at strengthening standards within the education sector and supporting the financial stability of existing institutions, many of which are privately owned.
Officials explained that the move is part of broader efforts to address concerns over the rapid proliferation of tertiary institutions without adequate funding, infrastructure, and academic capacity.
The government noted that during the six-year period, attention will be focused on improving the quality of education, upgrading facilities, and ensuring that existing institutions meet the required regulatory standards.
Education stakeholders say the policy could help consolidate resources and enhance the overall performance of tertiary institutions nationwide.
