The Federal Ministry of Health has ordered the immediate disengagement of directors who have spent at least eight years in the directorate cadre.
The directive, contained in a memo sighted in Abuja on Tuesday, affects directors in the ministry, federal hospitals, agencies and parastatals under its supervision.
The memo, signed by Tetshoma Dafeta, Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, stated that the action is in line with the Eight-Year Tenure Policy of the Federal Public Service as provided in the Revised Public Service Rules 2021 (PSR 020909).
According to the circular, all affected officers who had completed eight years as directors as of December 31, 2025, are to be disengaged immediately. Heads of agencies and parastatals were also directed to ensure proper handover of official documents and possessions, while salaries are to be stopped through the IPPIS Unit. Any emoluments received after the effective date of disengagement are to be refunded.
The ministry noted that the directive reiterates a recent circular issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, warning that failure to comply would attract stiff sanctions.
Under Section 020909 of the Revised Public Service Rules approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2021 and operational from July 27, 2023, directors (GL 17) are to compulsorily retire after eight years in that rank, while permanent secretaries have a four-year tenure subject to renewal based on performance.
Monitoring teams from the Office of the Head of Civil Service and the ministry are expected to oversee compliance.
