The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Musa Aliyu, has disclosed that the commission monitored various infrastructure projects valued at 21.23 trillion naira. This extensive oversight was conducted to prevent corrupt practices and ensure that the funds allocated for roads and bridges are utilized effectively.
Speaking at a recent event, Aliyu emphasized that the commission is committed to tracking public expenditure to protect the interests of Nigerian taxpayers.
According to the ICPC boss, the monitoring exercise revealed several challenges in the execution of public contracts, including delays and attempts to bypass procurement laws. By maintaining a physical presence at project sites and auditing financial records, the commission has been able to flag irregularities before they lead to total project abandonment.
This proactive approach is part of a broader strategy to instill discipline in the handling of massive capital projects funded by the federal government.
Furthermore, Aliyu noted that the commission is working closely with professional bodies and civil society organizations to improve the quality of project delivery. He warned that contractors and government officials found complicit in inflating costs or embezzling funds will face strict legal consequences.
The ICPC intends to continue this rigorous monitoring process to ensure that the billions of naira invested in infrastructure translate into tangible benefits for the Nigerian people and the national economy.
