A leadership tussle within the National Union of Road Transport Workers has taken a new turn as Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa has been affirmed as the legitimate president of the union, effectively unseating Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo).
The development follows a ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which upheld an earlier judgment of the National Industrial Court recognising Baruwa as the duly elected president of the union.
The appellate court dismissed the appeal challenging Baruwa’s leadership, describing it as lacking merit, and reaffirmed that he remains the lawful head of the NURTW.
With the judgment, Baruwa has moved to take control of the union’s national secretariat, consolidating his position amid the prolonged leadership crisis within the transport body.
The dispute had earlier intensified after MC Oluomo was elected at a separate convention and assumed office, a move critics described as a violation of existing court rulings.
Legal and political observers say the court’s decision reinforces the supremacy of the rule of law in resolving internal disputes within unions and organisations.
However, the crisis has created divisions within the NURTW, with rival factions continuing to lay claim to leadership, raising concerns about stability within the union.
