NBA Says Plateau Killings Heartbreaking, Demands Urgent Action

The Nigerian Bar Association has expressed deep concern over the renewed killings in Plateau State, describing the loss of lives as heartbreaking and a stark reminder of the nation's security challenges. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NBA leadership noted that the persistent attacks on various communities in the state have reached an unacceptable level. The association underscored that according to the 1999 Constitution, the security and welfare of the people must remain the primary purpose of government.

This reaction follows a recent tragic incident in the Jos North local government area, where Governor Caleb Mutfwang confirmed that at least 28 residents were killed in a "barbaric and unprovoked" attack. In response to the violence, the state government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in the affected areas, effective from midnight on March 29 until April 1, 2026. The NBA joined other national bodies in demanding that security agencies go beyond preliminary investigations and ensure that those responsible for orchestrating the massacre are brought to justice.

Furthermore, the legal body urged the Federal Government to overhaul the internal security framework to prevent further "tit-for-tat" violence that has plagued the region for years. The NBA also called on the National Human Rights Commission and civil society organizations to closely monitor the situation to ensure that the victims are not forgotten and that the displaced families receive the necessary support. The association stressed that justice and accountability are the only paths toward restoring lasting peace and unity in Plateau State.
