Nigeria Set to Receive Long-Acting HIV Prevention Injection in March
Nigeria will begin receiving a new long-acting HIV prevention drug in March 2026, as health authorities intensify efforts to reduce new infections and expand access to modern prevention tools.

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) confirmed that the medication, known as Lenacapavir, has secured regulatory approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) ahead of its rollout.

According to officials, the drug is administered twice yearly, offering a more convenient alternative to daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Health experts say the injectable option could improve adherence and significantly strengthen HIV prevention efforts, particularly among high-risk populations.

NACA explained that the introduction of the medication forms part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to curb new infections and move closer to epidemic control.

The agency added that arrangements are ongoing to ensure smooth distribution once the shipment arrives in March.
Nigeria is home to an estimated 1.9 million people living with HIV, with authorities continuing to scale up testing, treatment, and prevention initiatives nationwide.
