Nigerian Traders Halt Onion Exports To Ghana Over Harassment, Truck Seizures
In a move that threatens to disrupt regional food trade within the West African sub-region, Nigerian onion traders have officially announced the suspension of all exports to Ghana. The decision, reached during an emergency meeting on Monday, April 6, 2026, follows a series of reported incidents involving the harassment of Nigerian truck drivers and the arbitrary seizure of their goods by Ghanaian security agencies.

The National President of the Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (OPMAN) disclosed that several trucks carrying perishable goods have been detained at various checkpoints and border crossings without clear legal justification. The association noted that these delays have led to massive financial losses as the onions rot in the tropical heat, while drivers face physical intimidation and extortion.

"We cannot continue to supply a market where our members' livelihoods are treated with such disregard," the association stated. "Until there is a high-level diplomatic intervention and a guarantee of safety for our personnel and assets, the export ban remains in place." The move is expected to cause a sharp spike in onion prices across major markets in Accra and Kumasi, where Nigerian onions are a staple.

The Nigerian Ministry of Trade and Investment has been notified of the development and is reportedly in talks with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to resolve the impasse. Trade experts warn that if the situation persists, it could undermine the spirit of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFCAs) agreement. For now, Nigerian producers are looking toward domestic markets and other neighboring countries like Niger and Chad to divert their supplies while the diplomatic standoff continues.
